3 Chicago area rail yards: Calumet, Homewood, Melrose Park, IL
The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED; the spelling of “employees” is correct, dating from the 1800s) of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters is holding three “Healthcare NOT Wealthcare” rallies in the Chicago area on Wednesday, May 3.
Can you come out to support them? If so, please contact Anne Scheetz, 773-486-6276.
Rallies will take place at 5:30 am in three Chicago-area rail yards:
Calumet Yard, Main Entrance, corner of E 103rd Street and South Doty Avenue
Canadian National Headquarters, corner of Ashland Avenue and Maple Road, Homewood IL 60430
Union Pacific Proviso Yard, 5050 W. Lake Street, Melrose Park IL 60160.
ISPC and PNHP member Anne Scheetz will speak briefly.
BMWED supports single-payer health care. They are currently engaged in an ugly contract fight as wealthy railroads demand large concessions in their health benefits.
BMWED is a member of the Labor Campaign for Single Payer. Three of their members joined the April 8, 2017, Medicare for All Rally in Elgin (video pending).
From the BMWED flyer:
The BMWED leadership has been bargaining hard with Union Pacific and the other big Railroads on Healthcare for two years. With careful research we found $100 million in annual savings in the delivery of our Healthcare. But the Railroads continue to demand that we pay much more for Healthcare despite their great profitability. Their most recent proposal involves us going backwards economically over the life of the contract – all while CEOS like UP’s Lance Fritz are guaranteed tens of millions in compensation.
Please join the BMWED and other Rail Unions on Wednesday, May 3. Together we’ll show these greedy employers that their demands for concessions will be met with firm resistance.
BMWED will provide additional directions and parking information. Marshals will be available to help people park in the correct locations and find their way to the rallies. Please check back for updates.
